USA Has the WORST Consular Services in the World (US Passport Myths: My Story as an American Abroad)
I am embarrassed and ashamed of the experience of being an overseas American trying to access consular services. There is only one country in the world that has ever and continually treats me, as a native-born citizen, with disrespect -- whether at the border, when traveling, or when managing life as an expat -- and that is the United States of America. I am a law-abiding, tax-compliant, globally-minded, highly-educated, well-researched individual who is attempting to maneuver a system that is not only idiotic but deliberately hostile to my literal needs and entitlements as a citizen. The US is a paper tiger that purports to be the best country/passport/economy in the world and a bastion of freedom -- but I have known for a long time it is not. This is not just one isolated event of frustration but an ongoing trend of decay, and so many people I know share the same issues.
I wanted to share one vignette story to illustrate this today. It's a long story, but enjoy it if you please. This is my experience attempting to access basic consular passport services from abroad. I was confronted with the inability to reach a human or get clear answers, several lack of access of appointments, outright erroneous information, disturbingly rude personal prodding and property confiscation, slow and incompetent technology systems, and so much more.
The US may actually have the worst consular services in the world. Even in Europe, where bureaucracy is bad, there is a large network for EU citizens or embassies/consulates are smaller and you can reach a person. And even in developing, I am either treated with respect or discretion/shortcuts to get what needs done are available to me as much as the next person. The US is the absolute worst combination of hubris that it is the best while also simultaneously being the worst.

I have this light. Does anyone know if there is a soft box that could be used with it that isn’t the one that came with it? Something easier to install?
